Jacksonville city the 14th Largest city in North Carolina is the capital city old Onslow county. It’s one of the youngest city in the united states and ranks as a fifth fastest growing city. Jacksonville city was named after President Andrew Jackson when Jacksonville became a town in 1842. Jacksonville has a rich and an exciting history. In 1752 a hurricane destroyed the county seat of Johnston, and wantlands Ferry which is on the upper side of the New River became the new County courthouse and was renamed Onslow courthouses.


The Tuscarora war

Which was between the British, Dutch, German settlers and Native Americans ending in 1713 followed permanent settlement in New Bern, and Wilmington and the new river became a center for the production of Naval stores like turpentine. In 2016 Jacksonville became the first to honor the 13th amendment to the united states constitution which makes slavery in the united states illegal. The adoption makes any form of slavery including human trafficking illegal.


Income

Jacksonville relied mainly on Tobacco, lumber stores and naval stores to bring an income. The mapping of the Fort Monroe, Virginia and other parts of South Carolina including parts of the New River by a US Army Corps Of Engineers George Gillette may have sparked a war, and the Navy department established a training base. Later the Marine Barracks was built and renamed the Camp Lejeune Marine Base. The army base came at a cost to the local families as they had to relocate with some of them missing out on relocation compensation. The training camp led to an increase in the population in Jacksonville as more immigrants inhabited the area as well as the families of young marines and the retirees.


Jackson is now a full town with several social amenities

The town has both private and public schools, higher education colleges, alternative school and a charter school. Currently, the mayor of the city is Sammy Phillips. The city continues to experience growth, and in 2013 the population was around 69,079 with 6.7% being whites and 20% are African American. The community lives in the camp and the rest of the New River station.
